The reflex, after years on the barrier island, is to point the car south on A1A and end up somewhere on Ocean Drive. That habit is starting to look dated. The most interesting rooms to open near Indian River Shores in the last year sit west of the Merrill Barber and 17th Street bridges, in the old working spine of Vero Beach: a restored citrus packing house near the airport, a supper club on Old Dixie, an Italian deli in a strip off 9th Street SW. If you have lived in the Shores long enough to have a standing Saturday table somewhere on the beach, this is the summer to break the rotation.

Here is what the new mainland map looks like, and how each stop actually feels once you are inside.

The Packing House That Got a Second Life

Hogan Yards opened this year at 2745 St Lucie Ave, in the shell of the former Hogan & Sons citrus packing house next to the Vero Beach Regional Airport. Tom Corr, one of the property owners, said the building is an iconic type in Florida from the citrus industry, and most of them are getting torn down, so it was nice to hold on to it. The bones show: rough-sawn wood tops, a wraparound porch, a fenced yard for kids, Adirondack chairs under a shade tree.

Two local operators share the space. The Bings, who created Orchid Island Brewery in 2014, are bringing the beer, and the Chianises, who opened Pepper & Salt BBQ in 2022, are bringing the barbecue. The bar serves Orchid Island Beer, red and white wines and sangrias, and the food is crafted by Pepper & Salt BBQ, which relocated to this site with a brisket-heavy menu. Pizza ovens went in during the buildout, and Texas-style steak nights are on the table as future specials.

The concept did not come out of thin air. Tom Corr and his family visited the Rayback Collective in Boulder, Colorado, a renovated plumbing building with outdoor cornhole and food trucks, and while their kids played the Corrs sat and chatted with a Boulder couple in their eighties, saying it was an unbelievable experience of many age groups. That is the working model here. Pickleball courts on one side, a taproom on the other, live music some evenings, and the arcade for anyone who came with grandchildren.

For a Shores resident, the practical read is this. You are roughly fifteen minutes from the north-end gates. You can eat brisket in a room that used to grade fruit for shipping, drink a Star Ruby IPA that was contract-brewed to keep the label alive through the brewery's Ocean Drive years, and never once feel like you are in the tourist part of town.

Atmosphere at Vero, and the Old Dixie Argument

The second reason to point west runs on a different frequency entirely. Atmosphere at Vero officially opened its doors in September 2025 with the mission of creating a space where the Vero Beach community and beyond can gather for upscale cuisine, a wide variety of wines, and live jazz as the backdrop for the evening. The address is 1925 Old Dixie Hwy, ten minutes and a world away from the beach.

Mike and Maria Mendez retired from the insurance business in Miami more than five years ago, made Vero Beach their home, and decided the town was missing a place that blended live jazz, fine dining, and an elegant atmosphere; they brought in their son, culinary school graduate Chef Mike Jr., who curated the founding menu, along with his wife Alyssa.

The programming has the shape of a real supper club rather than a restaurant with a band in the corner. Live jazz is performed nightly, featuring piano, saxophone, guitar, and vocals, and most evenings carry no cover charge with reservations recommended, while Cabaret Nights take place monthly with ticketed performances by nationally and internationally renowned jazz artists. Moonlight Sax Thursdays feature live saxophone as a smooth, ambient backdrop to the evening. Recent and upcoming bookings have leaned into range: Bossa Nova, Latin jazz tribute nights, a Napa Valley wine tasting paired with an album release.

A note before you book, because it matters at the door:

To maintain the ambiance, guests are asked to dress in sophisticated, chic attire, and to avoid bright club wear, graphic tees, sportswear, scrubs, shorts, tank tops, flip-flops, Crocs, or worn or colorful sneakers.

If you have friends visiting from a northern city who quietly miss the Manhattan or Palm Beach dinner-and-music routine, this is the answer. The room is small. Reservations for Wednesday through Saturday, 4 to 10 pm, are the safe move.

Three Smaller Rooms Worth the Detour

Not every trip across the bridge needs to be a full evening. The Treasure Coast Foodie's June 2026 roundup surfaced three smaller openings that reward a lunch run or an errand stop.

Nonna Lina's Italian Market, Deli & Bakery at 2950 9th St SW. The market brings a taste of old-world Italy to Vero Beach through a curated selection of imported meats, cheeses, pastas, specialty products, and made-to-order sandwiches, opened by Johnny I., a longtime New York businessman with Italian roots who wanted to recreate the authentic flavors he grew up with, and named in honor of his grandmother who taught him to cook. Customers visit for two reasons: the impressive sandwiches, including the towering Vero Italian, and the chance to spend a little time with Johnny himself when they are craving a taste of Brooklyn in Vero Beach.

Giving Tree Coffee Company, a locally owned coffee spot with a specific backstory. Owner Rich Nelson returned home after spending 20 years in Brazil with a vision to create a warm and welcoming gathering place. It slots neatly into a mid-morning routine when you are already on the mainland for something else.

Willee's Pizza at 1453 20th St, notable for one detail Shores residents will appreciate: inside dining room, service animals only, but on the outdoor patio, well-behaved pets are allowed. If you walk the dog before dinner rather than after, this is the one to file away.

Why the Mainland Suddenly Reads Differently

There is a broader shift underneath these individual openings. The Treasure Coast is becoming a more layered dining region, with newer restaurants that give locals better reasons to stay local and give visitors better reasons to explore beyond the usual names. Vero Beach currently has the strongest range of notable newer concepts among the three Treasure Coast counties.

The old assumption was that anything worth eating on a Friday night sat within a five-block radius of the ocean. That is no longer true. One review of Atmosphere put it plainly: as the saying goes, what is old is new again, and Old Vero is definitely making a comeback, with the new center of gravity in Vero Beach being the downtown strip of restaurants, bars, art galleries, and boutique shops. Hogan Yards extends the pattern west toward the airport. Nonna Lina's and the Oslo Cafe cluster it out toward 9th SW. The barrier island is still the barrier island, but the reason to leave it for dinner is stronger than it has been in years.

For anyone tracking the summer calendar as well, summer 2026 in Indian River County is packed with live music, waterfront celebrations, foodie favorites, and Fourth of July fun. A lot of that programming lives on the mainland side of the bridges too.

A Simple Way to Plan the Next Two Weekends

• A weekday lunch at Nonna Lina's, sandwich in hand, coffee stop at Giving Tree on the way back.
• A Saturday afternoon at Hogan Yards, pickleball optional, brisket not.
• A Thursday Moonlight Sax booking at Atmosphere, dress code respected.
• A patio pizza night at Willee's when the dog is coming along.

None of it requires a special occasion. That is the point. These are neighborhood rooms, run by people who chose to live here, and they are close enough to the Shores that they belong in the regular rotation rather than the once-a-season list.
